While most people think you need to have a bundle of money to travel, it is not the case! I’ve learned from experience, that you can travel with a whole lot less money as long as you don't stay in motels, don't eat all your meals at restaurants, and stay away from the typical tourist traps. But, if you do want to travel like that, then you do need a lot of money. If you don’t need all that, and prefer to stay off the beaten trail. I’ve found that traveling can be very affordable. Like myself, most of us have a dream of hitting the road, especially for an extended period of time. So, here are my tips on how to travel with less money so that you can stay on the road longer if not permanently.
Travel can be as expensive or as inexpensive as you choose to make it; that is, If you live like a local once your there. For example, bring along a cooler and go to the local grocery stores, instead of dining out 3 times a day. Go for the slow and authentic experience rather than flashy hotels and bungee jumping every day, it costs a lot less.
For Example; One of my favorite road trips was to the Florida Everglades where we brought along our camping gear and bicycles. We stayed in a KOA camping cabin in Naples that we used for a base camp. In the afternoons we'd drive around and check out the local area. During the day we'd take highway 41 through the Everglades, and we toured other areas of south Florida. We had a really good time, all on a very small budget.
Keep in mind, the less you spend, the longer you’ll be able to travel. After awhile you'll get good at not spending money on things you don’t need. You might see things you’d like to buy, or attractions you want to see, but if you can avoid impulse shopping and spending on your trip, you’ll have more money for your travels! And wouldn’t you rather collect memories and experiences than accumulate things!
Buying lattes and eating in restaurants is an easy way to spend a lot of money. I cut back dramatically on over priced drinks and eating out to save money on my trips, and actually got used to it and it feels great to be able to save money, and use what I save for staying on the road as long as possible.
Vehicles such as the Toyota Prius, Corolla & KIA Soul get great mileage. Also you can use a minivan if you want more room. Although mini vans wont get as good of mileage as the previously mentioned types of vehicles. Any of the vehicles I listed and numerous other models you can modify for traveling by taking out the back seats and if your solo, can take out the front passenger seat also, and build a sleeping bunk. By sleeping in your vehicle and not paying for nightly motel rooms, will save you a small fortune.
So there it is, my tips to you about how to travel with a lot less money than most think. I hope you find them useful and go and travel soon and reap the benefits from them on your adventures!
